What Is Heavy Metal Panel 1?
Heavy Metal Panel 1 is a laboratory screening panel designed to measure selected metals and trace elements that may be relevant when evaluating potential environmental, occupational, dietary or other exposure. The significance of an individual result depends on the person's exposure history, symptoms, clinical circumstances and the specimen and test methodology used.

What Is Included? The 14 Parameters
| Parameter | Category |
|---|---|
| Arsenic | Metal |
| Bismuth | Metal |
| Cadmium | Heavy metal |
| Chromium | Metal |
| Cobalt | Metal / trace element |
| Lead | Heavy metal |
| Manganese | Trace element |
| Mercury | Heavy metal |
| Thallium | Heavy metal |
| Iron | Essential element |
| Copper | Essential trace element |
| Nickel | Metal |
| Selenium | Essential trace element |
| Zinc | Essential trace element |
About the parameters
- Arsenic: exposure can occur through environmental, occupational, dietary and other sources. Interpretation depends on the form of arsenic, the specimen and the timing of exposure.
- Lead: may be relevant when there is concern about occupational, environmental or other exposure. Interpret according to exposure history and clinical circumstances.
- Mercury: exposure can come from certain occupational, environmental or dietary sources. Interpretation depends on the type of mercury, source and specimen.
- Cadmium, nickel, cobalt, chromium, thallium and bismuth: can be encountered through certain occupational, environmental, medication- or material-related sources. Interpretation depends on exposure history, form of the metal and laboratory methodology.
- Manganese: an essential element, but excessive exposure can be associated with health concerns.
- Iron: an essential nutrient. A single iron measurement should not be read as a complete assessment of iron status.
- Copper, selenium and zinc: essential trace elements. Results should be interpreted with clinical circumstances and other findings, and not used on their own to diagnose a nutritional or medical condition. Both too little and too much selenium can be clinically relevant.
What Is Not Included?
Heavy Metal Panel 1 does not test for every possible metal or environmental contaminant. It measures only the 14 parameters listed above. If you have a known exposure to a substance that is not listed, a different or additional test may be needed.
For comparison, Heavy Metal Panel 2 (10 parameters, AED 1,199) covers a different group: barium, caesium, antimony, tin, molybdenum, silver, vanadium, beryllium, aluminium and strontium. Lead, mercury and arsenic are in Panel 1 only.
When Should I Consider a Heavy Metal Test?
Testing is generally most useful when there is a reasonable reason to investigate exposure, for example:
- a known workplace or occupational exposure, or work with metals or industrial materials
- accidental exposure or environmental contamination concerns
- a suspected contaminated product or material
- relevant dietary, medication or product exposure
- a healthcare professional's recommendation
The appropriate test depends on which metal is suspected, how and when the exposure occurred, and which specimen is appropriate. Testing may be appropriate even without symptoms when exposure is known or suspected.
Is This a Diagnostic Test?
No. Heavy Metal Panel 1 is a laboratory screening panel that provides measurements of selected metals and trace elements. An elevated or abnormal result does not by itself establish a diagnosis or prove metal poisoning. Results must be read alongside exposure history, symptoms, timing of exposure, type of metal, specimen and laboratory methodology.
The test alone generally cannot show where an exposure came from. Identifying a source requires looking at the person's workplace, environment, diet, medications, consumer products, hobbies and recent exposure history.
Specimen and Preparation
Sample requirements depend on the individual test and laboratory methodology. Please confirm specimen requirements when booking.
Do not assume fasting is required. Confirm:
- whether fasting is required and whether water is permitted
- whether medications need special instructions
- whether supplements should be discussed
- any specific collection requirements
Do not stop prescribed medication without medical advice.

What Happens After Testing?
If a result is elevated or unexpected, the next step is professional interpretation. Depending on the suspected exposure, a healthcare professional may consider reviewing the exposure history, confirming the result, ordering additional testing, assessing symptoms, identifying potential exposure sources, or recommending follow-up.
What if my result is high?
A high result should not be interpreted in isolation. Review the report with a qualified healthcare professional, discuss possible sources of exposure, and ask whether confirmatory or additional testing is appropriate. Do not attempt self-treatment or "detox" based solely on a laboratory result.
